Packing for a move overseas
Probably one of the least exciting parts of moving abroad is the packing and shipping of all your belongings to a new country. When you have to do this with kids, it can be a complete nightmare, as you attempt to de-clutter and pack efficiently without breaking hearts and causing upset. Who’d have thought that the dog-eared old bear that has been stuffed down the back of the radiator for years could suddenly be your daughter’s prized possession?
And it’s not just all about what to pack either. You’ve also got to tackle how to pack, and who will help you move all your gear to your new home abroad. Here are some of our top tips for packing to move away: just click on the links to read more on that topic.
Understand what to leave behind
From once-in-a-lifetime valuables to irreplaceable family heirlooms, there are some things that just shouldn’t end up in your packing box. Find a relative to leave them with, or put them in a cheap storage locker until you can transport them safely. Larger items, furniture and big, space consuming toys should be considered carefully too, as the cost of shipping can far outweigh the value of the item. Find out how to decide what to take abroad with you.
Know what you’re banned from taking
Some items are banned from importation into other countries, whereas others will allow the import of restricted items as long as you’ve got the right paperwork. You need to think about the extremes of temperature and humidity likely to be experienced by the shipped items, and keep some valuables with you on the plane rather than leaving them to the movers.
Plan what needs to go where
Planning what to pack and where is crucial if you’re going to end up with the right things at the right time. Keep in mind that shipping can take a long time, so anything that you’ll need immediately when you arrive will need to come with you on the plane. However, you also need to remember that luggage can get lost sometimes, so make sure you can live without it if it ends up in another city. Separate your items into what to ship, what to take with you on the plane and what to send via air freight.
Choosing the removal service
Seeking an approved, accredited and insured removal company is the first step to finding a great mover. Looking out for testimonials, and effectively comparing prices of international removal companies will help you weed out the great from the not-so-good, and will help you team up with the company that’s really going to look after you. Preparing for the packers
If your removal company is going to do the packing for you, make sure you know how to prepare for the packing team coming in. Bear in mind, they will pack everything that can be packed, which can include overflowing bins, dirty crockery and things you didn’t want packed at all!
If you’re packing it yourself
If you decide not to use a professional packing service, you will need to be super organised if you’re going to get everything packed well. Having enough packing supplies and knowing what to pack where can make all the difference to your items arriving in one piece or in many pieces.
