An English classroom online
I am based in France and run Blackhen Education, an online tutoring business for English speaking children, who want to maintain their English skills. We provide English courses for children aged 7-16, including IGCSE English Language & Literature courses. Our courses are based on National Curriculum guidelines and all of our tutors are qualified and experienced teachers.
I decided to set up Blackhen Education two years ago, because I became aware of parents who were concerned that their children were forgetting how to read and write in English. We believe that to be truly bilingual, a child needs to be able to read and write in both languages, as well as being able to speak both. I also believe it offers the child choices. If they decide at a later date to work or study in the UK, they will need their English.
Blackhen Education is for all children between the ages of 7- 16 yrs. Above all, we aim to offer English-speaking children an opportunity to maintain and develop their reading and writing skills in their mother-tongue.
The courses consist of topic based units, so not only is the child working on their spelling, grammar and punctuation skills, they also learn about the British culture. The packs are progressive, ensuring the child acquires all the necessary skills to start one of our IGCSE courses if they choose to, at 14 yrs old.
We have found that most of our English-speaking children are slightly behind their UK counterparts, when they start with Blackhen. But this is not a problem, we soon have them catching up. We encourage reading as well, to reinforce their written and spoken English.
Although we are based in France, our courses and are available for anyone who has access to a computer. We now have students working with us from all over France and have recently had enquiries from Italy, Germany & China.
Our online courses are very accessible; the student can work in the privacy of their own home, at their own pace and can fit the work around their busy schedules of school and clubs. Some of our students take their work into school with them.
A student can start one of our courses at anytime of the year. Our only requirements are that the child can read & write some English before they start. We believe that it is important that the child is confident in their second language and have settled into their school environment before embarking on an English course.
